Summer
sun feels wonderful on our bare skin.
Those with fur do not share our sentiment. The tropical heat is not
a blessing for longhair dogs.
Regularly dog grooming and clipping dogs can make the difference between
a comfortable summer and an anguishing bake for dogs. Clipping dogs is an
easy and effective way to help dogs to cool off.
Think of how refreshing
it feels to take off a jacket or sweater when you feel too hot. Clipping dogs has the same effect for them.
While bringing your dogs into an air-conditioned house after they have
been outside all day may seem thoughtful; it is actually a stress for dogs.
Dogs going from one extreme to the other and their bodies have
to rapidly compensate. It is especially hard for dogs to cool off if they have been very
active, after dog training or exercise. Clipping dogs helps prevent overheating
because the insulating effect of the fur is gone.
Clipping dogs also has health benefits
for them. Dogs frequently get
grass awns, or cheat grass, caught
in the fur between their toes. Over
time, the seed can work its way into
the skin and cause a painful abscess.
If the fur is clipped away between
their toes, the seed has no way of
getting caught in the first place.
Finally, a clipped coat is easier for
dog owners to manage. Longhaired dogs need regular combing to prevent the
formation of mats. A shorter coat eliminates this chore. In addition,
long fur forms clumps when it sheds. The clumps accumulate and grow to
resemble “dust bunnies”. After clipping a dog does not have
enough fur to generate these clumps and consequently eliminates the formation
of these extra “guests”.
Help your dogs get the most out of the season by helping them stay cool.
Clipping the dogs will not only make them look
good, they will be happier because
they are not trapped in a fur
coat when it is 40 degrees in the
shade!
