Dog Behavior Problem - Bite Inhibition
Dogs must learn how sensitive human
skin is to their teeth, so you have
to teach your dog a "bite inhibition" to solve this common dog behavior
problem.
Start by letting your dog bite your
hand and give a very high pitched "yelp" just loud enough to pretend it hurts.
Do not jerk your hand away. This should
cause your dog to show some calming
behavior like head turning, shaking,
licking, or scratching.
If your dog continues to bite hard,
you give another high-pitched "yelp" and walk away from your dog.
Soon your dog will learn that the behavior
of biting is no longer rewarding as
you refuse to give attention. This non-reinforcement
should stop this common dog behavior problem.
Dog Behavior Problem - Destructive Chewing
Chewing, ripping, shredding, and generally
destroying stuff is a dog behavior problem.
For dogs, chewing is a form of therapy
to relieve stress and release energy.
If you come home and find that your
dog has destroyed something, do not
punish
the dog.
When you are home, always lavish your
dog with praise every time you see
him playing with or chewing his toys.
Most chewing problems occur just
before the dog owner returns home.
Litter a special area with a variety
of interesting dog
toys. Do stuff rawhide, marrowbones,
and Snack
balls. The dog will be entertained
for hours trying to extricate the
treats from the toy.
Dog Behavior Problem
- Leash Pulling
Nothing is so rewarding
for your dog as taking you for your daily walk,
pulling like a husky on a snow sleigh.
The reward for this common dog behavior
is powerful! Leash
Pulling brings your dog wherever
he wants to go.
Stop walking every time the leash
goes tight and your dog starts to
pull, wait until the leash goes slack,
and reward it.
Yes, it is that simple, if you do
not let your dog pull you, and reward
your dog walking on a loose leash
instead, soon you will stop this dog behavior problem.
In the same way, you attached names
to all other wanted dog
behaviors you can attach a name
to the behavior of walking on a loose
leash.
Dog Behavior Problem - Jumping
up
This is the most common unwanted behavior you can teach your dog! When did you
teach it? Every time you lifted your
puppy towards our face, every time
you gave attention by exchanging enthusiastic
greetings, is how you reinforced this
common dog behavior. To stop your
dog jumping
up, all you have to do is consistently
remove the reinforcement
your dog gets for this unwanted dog behavior.
If your dog jumps up, just look up
and away totally ignore the behavior,
wait till your dog stops jumping up
and either sits, or stands quietly.
Repeat this until your arrival becomes
a stimulus for sitting.
Dog Behavior Problem - Digging
Digging is a highly enjoyable and
natural dog activity.
If your dog loves digging, provide
him with his own digging pit just
as parents would provide their child
with a sand box. Take some of his
favorite dog
toys and let him watch you make
a fuss over burying them. Call your
dog over and help him dig things up.
Once your dog understands that digging
in his pit is an acceptable and enjoyable
activity, you can teach him that digging
elsewhere is forbidden. The first
step is to teach your dog to stay
completely off the flower and vegetable
gardens.
Each time he gets close to the wrong
area, quietly warn him by saying 'Off.'
If he stays away immediately praise
him.
Dangerous
Behavior Problem - Chasing
Chasing is an hazardous dog behavior problem. Moving objects stimulate
the dogs predatory nature and cause
the dog to chase. Until you have learned
to control your dogs chasing instinct,
do not let him off-leash. It is dangerous
for the dog and the object he is chasing.
If your dog is chasing cars, do a
'NO' exercise as a friend repeatedly
drives by. It's important that you
practice this in a set-up situation.
The driver must be aware of the training
so he/she can stop the car immediately
should you lose control over your dog.
Dog Behavior
Problem - Begging at the table
If you reward your dog with food scraps
from the table when you are eating,
you will very quickly teach this rewarding
behavior of begging at the table.
To stop this common dog behavior problem
you must first stop feeding your dog
from the table. Then you ignore your
dog 'begging' during dinner, and after
dinner put whatever scraps you want
to feed your dog into your dog’s
dish in the kitchen. Soon you will
have your dog waiting by the dish
in the kitchen, reward this wanted
alternate behavior.
